Why did Jesus come to earth? What was his ministry all about? It’s easy to miss the real purpose of Jesus’ ministry if we fail to see it within the context of the Old Testament. The entire Old Testament narrative from Genesis to Malachi is a stark reminder of the damaging impact of sin. Relationships are severed. The vulnerable are ignored. Self is deified. Power is king. The cycle of disobedience, repentance, empty promises that then lead to even greater disobedience is repeated over and over again.
Luke reminds us that it is into this world of brokenness that Jesus arrives. From the very beginning of his ministry, Jesus clearly proclaims that he is the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies. He has come to heal the sick, bind up the broken, free the enslaved and proclaim God’s saving grace. He has come to undo the ravaging effect of sin.
