A Look Into Discernment Dinners

Posted August 14th, 2025

When Jesus told his disciples, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you,” that invitation still stands for us today.

Trying to figure out where God is sending you can be overwhelming. Where do we even start? What do we do when we are there?

You may be asking questions like: Should I stay or move? Should I take that job or leave the one I have? Is this relationship right for me? What is God even asking of me right now?

Learning how to discern what God is doing in your life, and how we should respond, is a process that often leads to a more intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit.

At Clarksburg Church, we talk a lot about our sent spaces, the places we live, work, and play, and how God calls us to be sent, shine his light, and live out our rule of life, BELLS (Bless, Eat, Listen, Learn and be Sent).

That’s why we are making time to explore these questions together through Discernment Dinners, a two part experience designed to help us reflect on where and how we’re sent to these spaces.

What to Expect

Each dinner is a casual gathering with good food, conversation, and space to reflect.

The first dinner (August 19th) is about laying the foundation. We'll introduce some helpful tools for discernment, spend time getting to know one another, and reflect on what it means to be “called” to our sent space.

You can come with questions or a topic in mind for God to shine light on, or simply show up with a willingness to listen for God’s still small voice. Either way, you’ll leave with some “homework” to work through in the weeks following.

Over the next month, you’ll spend some time praying, reflecting, and just paying attention to what comes up.

At the second dinner (September 16th), we’ll come back together to share what we’ve found. You’ll put together 1–3 simple slides about your experience. Not a big presentation, more like sharing a story! The goal isn’t to have it all polished and perfect. It’s simply to show up and be present.

You’ll get to name what you’ve discovered and have the supportive group listen, reflect, and affirm what they see in you.

Why It Matters

Learning discernment is difficult. Sometimes God shows up through patterns, conversations, or unexpected confirmations. Other times, it’s just about trusting the next step. Even when it feels small or uncertain.

A participant from last year’s Discernment Dinner shared she walked into last year’s dinner not knowing what to expect,

"I felt like I may have overshared, provided too much info and didn't really know the room in that personal way so I felt a little discomfort from that... I do think it was good though overall to go through a process of discernment and be really intentional about trying to better understand [what God is asking of me].”

She shared,

“I was already in the process of discerning a particular topic... but over the month, I started to notice God showing up in ways that felt like confirmation [through] numerous signs/signals/confirmations of what I was uncertain of.”

If you’ve been questioning what’s next or are looking for a space to listen, this might be a good place to pause, pray, and process it with others. You don’t have to have it all figured out, you just have to be open to listening.

We’d love to save you a seat at the table.
