What the Student Group Is Really Like
If you’ve ever been curious about the student group at Clarksburg Church, or if you're a student wondering what it’s actually like, this is for you! I had the chance to chat with one of the adult leaders, Jacob Coppess, and Lyra Wolff, a student who’s been part of the group for three years, and their answers painted a clear picture of what’s been going on every Wednesday night.
This small group is a space where middle and high school students can be real, have fun, ask questions, and feel like they belong.
A Place to Be Yourself
Jacob described it as a warm, welcoming group made up of students who are figuring out life and faith together. It’s a safe space where students can talk about their questions, doubts, and passions without feeling judged.
He said, “We’ve created a space where students feel comfortable being honest. Whether they want to ask something deep or just talk about what they’re into, they know it’s a place where they’ll be listened to.”
Lyra added, “I’ve gotten to know people I probably wouldn’t have talked to otherwise. We’ve had a lot of fun together, and I’m excited to see how the group keeps growing and helps me grow too.”
What You Can Expect on a Typical Night
Most nights start with some time to hang out as people arrive. There’s always a game first or something outdoors to get people moving and laughing. Depending on who’s leading that night, the game could be anything from hide-and-seek in the church to adventuring to the creek behind the building to target practice with a paintball gun.
“It’s fun because you never know what we’ll be doing,” Lyra said. “Each leader comes up with something different, so it keeps things interesting.”
After the game, the group shifts into a time of discussion. The conversations are usually centered on a theme or a passage from the Bible. There’s a mix of lighthearted moments and deeper reflection where students are always encouraged to speak up and share what they think.
“It works best when the students are active participants,” Jacob said. “I often walk away learning something too. It’s not a lecture, it’s a real conversation.”
Moments That Matter
The most powerful moments aren’t always during the lesson. Sometimes it’s in the quieter in-between times, when students start to let their guard down.
Jacob shared how meaningful it is when students share artwork they’ve made, play a new song they’ve learned on guitar, or just talk about what’s been going on in their lives.
“It’s those moments when you realize this is more than just a meeting. It’s a community. These students know they can be themselves here, and that’s something special.”
Why You Should Come Check It Out
If you’re a student who's interested, whether you attend Clarksburg Church or not, you’re invited. Still a little unsure? Rest assured, there’s no pressure to know all the answers. Just show up as you are.
“It’s really welcoming,” Lyra shared. “We love meeting new people and making it a place where anyone can feel included.”
Whether you’re looking for fun, friendships, or a place to grow in your faith, this group has something to offer. You’re still welcome to come and see what it’s all about.
